02 TERN

The beautiful Tern, a William Fife Belfast Lough One Design yacht, was built by John Hilditch of Carrickfergus in 1897.

An initial batch of seven was shortly followed by two more, each of them named after a sea bird. After lots were drawn to allocate them to their new owners, number 7 went to WA, AG & TJ King – a Belfast family of coal merchants – who named her Tern.

On leaving the Elephant, she headed down to the South of France to compete in the prestigious Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez regatta. This iconic event, held annually in the bay of Saint-Tropez, gathers classic and modern yachts from around the world and is one of the Mediterranean's most celebrated sailing events.
